Siblings Work in Business (54)
We had been pretending to do an ordinary busking performance, but all the songs were bait to draw a crowd.
This busking event, from beginning to end, was to promote our debut song, “DUO.”
We had already debuted with “Last Day,” but…
Many people only knew “Last Day” as the OST for ‘He is 1+1=1,’ not a song by E-UNG.
Most people didn’t even know it was our song, or our group name.
But it was okay.
‘Thanks to that familiar hit song, we have such a large audience today.’
Lee Eun-ji and I exchanged casual greetings and got into position.
We were supposed to sit back-to-back, but we secretly agreed to just touch shoulders, without Lee Gu-reum knowing.
Looking around, besides the reporters with cameras, there were many curious eyes, expecting us to show them something.
Despite the open space, the crowd was packed, at least four layers deep.
People already knew we sang “Last Day.”
So…
Now, we just had to let them know that we were E-UNG.
The sound of crashing waves, followed by a 15-second intro specifically composed to connect with “Last Day,” played.
Same day, Same time
Same day, other…
A decadent keyboard melody…
A rhythmic bass drum beat… and Eun-ho’s unfamiliar, breathy voice.
‘It was okay during recording because I was focused on the emotions, but…’
Listening to it sober was a bit awkward.
Static—
Thankfully, my awkward voice was cut off by a static sound, like a broken radio.
Ah, this…
Reality is setting in
Now, it was Lee Eun-ji’s voice.
Her shoulder, touching mine, twitched.
It seemed like she also found her own whispering voice awkward.
The room I found is empty
Thump.
The intro ended with a heavy thud.
Then, the real intro of “DUO” began.
Thump— thump-thump
Wobble bass sound
With the familiar bass drum and wobble bass, Lee Eun-ji and I started moving, following our instincts, just as we practiced for weeks.
We separated our touching shoulders, placed our hands on the ground in the same position, and turned to face the front.
‘One.’
‘Two.’
We counted silently, and as if connected by strings, Eun-ji and Eun-ho stood up in perfect synchronization, their movements slightly awkward.
‘Focus.’
‘Don’t make a mistake.’
As we immersed ourselves in the performance, our eyes became vacant.
There was no light in our dead eyes.
As the intro ended, the wobble bass disappeared, leaving only the thumping of the bass drum, like a heartbeat.
“She’s pretty, but… a bit scary.”
“They look like puppets on strings.”
Perhaps because of their similar appearances…
Eun-ho and Eun-ji’s stiff movements created a slightly eerie atmosphere.
As the snare drum joined in and the song entered the first verse…
A melancholic glint appeared in Eun-ho’s previously dead eyes.
I had a dream
A dream where you disappeared
The audience and reporters gasped.
Somehow, it’s strange
The space is quiet
The reporter, who had initially thought that Eun-ho ‘lacked charm compared to his sister,’ felt like he had been hit on the back of his head.
“This is…”
He was surprised by Lee Eun-ji’s voice in the first song and impressed by Lee Eun-ho’s skill in the second.
And in the third song, he did well with a senior artist’s song, which could have been burdensome.
There wasn’t anything particularly impressive about the fourth and fifth songs.
Just as he had initially assessed, ‘They’re good.’
‘This is giving me goosebumps…’
Just decent and pleasant to listen to.
But with the added layer of subtle yet undeniable sorrow, Lee Eun-ho’s singing touched not his ears, but his heart.
Eun-ho, as if having finished his part, smoothly stepped aside to the rhythm.
Then, Eun-ji, letting out a short sigh, raised her hand and covered her eye.
Ah—
This, reality is setting in
Suddenly, the space beside me is empty
Eun-ji continued.
Having lost everything…
But at the same time, being calm because there was nothing left to lose.
Eun-ji’s complex emotions, expressed in the short lyrics, created a strange sound, melancholic but not sad.
It was a different emotion from Eun-ho’s.
Even shoes come in pairs, one can’t go out alone
Can’t walk on the sharp path alone
Eun-ji stretched out her foot, then hesitated, as if there was something sharp in front of her, and stepped back.
At the same time, she placed her hand on her forehead.
If this is reality, I wish it were a dream
Then, she covered her eyes with the same hand.
Eun-ji tilted her head, her eyes covered.
(If this is reality, I wish it were a dream)
Eun-ji’s voice in the MR echoed, with a different nuance than before.
Eun-ho closed the distance between them.
I thought it was a dream
He reached out and helped Eun-ji, who was slumping, stand up straight.
Eun-ji, still covering her eyes with one hand, leaned against Eun-ho’s arm.
I wished it were a dream
Then…
A dancer in a black hoodie separated their hands, and seven other pairs of black hands covered Eun-ji.
As if trying to completely hide her from view…
Despite their jerky movements, they quickly formed a wall between Eun-ji and Eun-ho.
The reporter, who had been immersed in the performance, flinched and shuddered.
Why don’t you answer beyond the door
I had a dream, a dream where you disappeared
Eun-ho sang the lyrics with a melancholic tone, as if looking beyond the wall.
Then, he raised his left hand and covered his eye, just like Eun-ji had done.
So I opened my eyes, but why am I still dreaming
He briefly revealed one eye by pulling his arm away, then covered it again with his right hand.
Ah, this…
Reality is setting in
If it’s a dream, let me wake up
If it’s not, let me dream
Eun-ji, who had been standing in the back, escaped from the black hands and, covering her eyes just like Eun-ho, stepped in perfect sync with the music.
Even if death separates us, we’ll always be together
Hand in hand, we’ve faced it
Following the change in rhythm, the two revealed their eyes.
Although the lyrics could have been interpreted romantically, Eun-ji’s innocent smile made it feel less so.
The oversized shirt fluttered, adding fluidity to Eun-ji’s movements.
Meanwhile, Eun-ho extended his free hand towards the opposite side where the dancers in black hoodies were forming a nightmare.
Countless black hands reached out from the nightmare towards Eun-ho’s hand.
But today, you…
At Eun-ho’s casual wave, the approaching black hands disappeared.
The figures in black hoodies quickly dispersed and formed a new formation around Eun-ho.
…why aren’t you saying anything?
The dancers in black hoodies swayed from side to side like puppets, following Eun-ho’s hand movements.
Ah, this…
Eun-ji, who had been smiling brightly until now, returned to the center with a cold expression.
…reality is setting in
Her eyes, which had been open, were covered again, and Eun-ho, standing back-to-back with Eun-ji, mirrored her movements.
He looked like a shadow, despite his bright outfit.
Thump.
As the heavy bass drum beat stopped, Eun-ji turned.
‘Wow.’
Some audience members gasped in surprise as Eun-ho instantly appeared in Eun-ji’s place.
The room I found… is empty
Eun-ho spread his fingers and revealed his calm eyes.
The dancers in black hoodies, who had been moving as a group, split into two groups of six.
Eun-ji and Eun-ho, who had been standing close together like shadows, also separated to opposite sides of the stage.
I thought it was a dream, I wished it were a dream
Why don’t you answer beyond the door
Thump, thump.
Eun-ji raised her fist and punched the air in time with the bass drum.
I can’t hear your usual “Why?”
I’m sad, this quiet, empty room is silent
As the black hoodies behind Eun-ji blocked her hands, she pushed them away.
Thump, thump.
I can’t see your gentle hand opening the door
I cry, because only one of our paired things remains
While Eun-ji knocked on the door…
Six dancers in black hoodies tried to cover Eun-ho’s eyes, just like they did to Eun-ji.
I thought it was a dream, I wished it were a dream
Why don’t you answer beyond the door
Eun-ho blocked and pushed away the black hands as they approached.
But the black hands eventually engulfed him.
As Eun-ho clasped his hands together in prayer, the black hands separated them.
Eun-ho, as if being abducted, was trapped and restrained by the black hoodies.
A cold, windy attic room
Here, I look at the moon alone
As Eun-ji slowly approached Eun-ho, the seemingly impenetrable black wall parted.
Hoping for you to come, hoping for you to dream
Eun-ho and Eun-ji held each other’s arms instead of hands and danced a waltz to the slowed rhythm.
As they stretched their arms out wide and then came close again, the song reached its end.
Right there
Eun-ji put her arm around Eun-ho’s shoulder, and Eun-ho, at the cue, lifted Eun-ji’s waist.
Right here
Camera flashes went off.
Meanwhile, loud cheers drowned out the sound of the flashes.
I felt overwhelmed with emotion.
It was a touching moment, enough to make me forget the slightly awkward ending pose.
I used to wonder why celebrities always said “Thank you” at the end of their concerts…
But now, standing here, the only words that came to mind were “Thank you.”
“Thank you!”
Thank you, and thank you again.
For staying and watching our performance.
For cheering us on like this.
“We are E-UNG! We’ll continue to work hard, so please keep an eye on us! Thank you!”
