Chapter 18: The Spat — Why Did He Just Come Sit Over Here?

The dinner with Auntie Shu was scheduled for the evening, at a famous private club in Yunchang. Their Chinese food was the best.

Shen Yanchu and Yu Shushu’s last meeting had been at He Songyi’s funeral two years prior. After they sat down, they exchanged some very polite pleasantries.

The conversation at the dinner table was also about work.

Yu Shushu asked, “Are you here for the New Moon matter this time?”

Shen Yanchu nodded. “You’re always well-informed.”

Shen Yusi ate her yellow fish and tofu soup, completely uninterested in what they were talking about.

She didn’t look up until the topic turned to her.

“You chose fashion design as your major. Are you planning to pursue a career in this direction?”

Yu Shushu asked because she knew Shen Yusi’s interest in many things was fleeting.

It wouldn’t be surprising if one day she decided to switch majors, or if she managed to stick with it but then wanted to go play in another field.

Knowing herself well, Shen Yusi couldn’t be entirely sure. “Probably, unless something unexpected happens.”

But painting was indeed the longest thing she had been able to stick with.

Her reason for studying fashion design was mainly because she liked beautiful things. She thought about winning a big award one day and wearing clothes she had designed herself. Wouldn’t that be fulfilling?

She didn’t have a very strong drive for success, nor did she demand that she achieve great things.

Maybe it was because her upbringing meant she didn’t have to worry about much. Everything was just about whether she was happy and wanted to do it.

Shen Yanchu never expected much from his daughter. But since she wanted to go in this direction, he was certainly going to pave the way for her.

Fortunately, the Shen family had the resources. Decades ago, Shen Yanchu’s aunt, Shen Yun, had already started her own independent brand, ‘Whisper,’ winning countless awards at home and abroad. Although it wasn’t as glorious as it once was, it was still among the top tier in the country.

Shen Yusi really didn’t have much of a plan right now. The school curriculum was still on basic courses. She hadn’t even touched the threshold of fashion design.

But Shen Yanchu had already made his decision. “Over winter break, I’ll arrange an internship for you at Whisper.”

Shen Yusi was stunned. “Under what identity?”

Whisper was now managed by Jiang Yanci. If she went in as the boss’s cousin, everyone would just try to flatter her. She wouldn’t learn anything real.

“Just make up some identity. No one’s going to check.”

“Oh, okay.” She’d just go and have some fun.

After the meal, Shen Yanchu and Shen Yusi returned to the hotel together. Before getting into the car, he suddenly said, “Want to pick up the car?”

Knowing what car he meant, Shen Yusi’s eyes lit up. “Sure.”

She had only mentioned it casually. She had planned to buy one herself, but she didn’t expect her dad to be so quick.

When she returned to school on Sunday evening, Shen Yusi rode her dad’s new electric scooter, humming a tune as she went to process the campus vehicle permit.

After everything was done, she happily posted a moments update.

Island: [I’m a car owner now.]

The picture showed the pink little scooty her dad had picked out for her. On her way, she had passed a gift shop and bought a bunch of accessories to pile on top. It looked very cluttered, but she loved it.

Xie Sheng sent a congratulatory message. “You bought a car?”

Shen Yusi said proudly, “Yeah! Pretty cool, right?”

Xie Sheng played along perfectly. “Wow! Little Island, you’re so impressive!”

Shen Yusi humphed. “Since it’s still early, come down to the dorm. I’ll take you for a ride so you can feel how awesome it is to have a scooter on campus.”

“You got it. I’m on my way down.”

Thinking that she could sleep a few more minutes for her 8 AM class, Shen Yusi was in a fantastic mood.

She rode towards the medical school dormitory. As she passed the main road of the medical college, she saw a familiar back.

She did a cool drift, stopping right in front of him and letting out a playful wolf whistle.

“Handsome, where are you headed? Want a ride home?”

Lin Yingzhou: “……”
